Zarflar, bir eylem hakkında bilgi veren, onların niteleyen kelimelerdir. Eylemin oluş şeklini, hangi boyutta veya ölçüde olduğunu, ne dereceye kadar olduğunu v.s anlatabilir; eyleme yer, zaman, tarz konusunda bilgiler ekleyebilir.
Örneğin; "Yılan hızla gitti" cümlesinde "hızla" kelimesi bir zarftır. Hızla kelimesi yılanın yaptığı hareketin "nasıl" olduğunu anlatır.
Zarflar, fiillerin dışında, diğer zarfları, sıfatları kelime grubunu ve cümleleri niteleyebilir.

Yer zarfları "yer" konusunda bilgi verir.
southwards, anywhere, around, there, everywhere, upstairs, downstairs, nearby

Adverbs of Certanity (kesinlik)
certainly, definitely, probably, undoubtedly, surely
